Estamos ante una obra mastodóntica. Tanto que el impulso inicial es tratar de reducir su tamaño con un “no es para tanto” o un “no aporta casi nada nuevo”. Y en parte es verdad. Pero claro, en parte no lo es. Los seguidores acérrimos de Young se preguntarán para qué necesitan estos 8 CDs en los que se incluye buena parte de la discografía oficial del canadiense entre 1963 y 1972. Toda ella diseminada con mayor o menor criterio y acompañada por una guarnición a ratos excesiva, a ratos jugosa de grabaciones ocultas, mezclas “diferentes” y tomas en directo hasta el hartazgo.
Está genial eso de bucear en el Young anterior a su explosión en solitario y con Crazy Horse. Lo que sí habría que matizar es el comienzo de su carrera por su cuenta. En otras palabras, el jugoso e irresistible solomillo que conforman Neil Young (1969), Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (1969), After the Gold Rush (1970) y Harvest (1972) es troceado y especiado de manera exótica. Y claro, a nosotros ya nos gustaba ese solomillo sin necesidad de cambiar la recta, por mucho que se aumente la ración. El empacho encima tiene difícil justificación en muchos de los bocados.
Lo “nuevo” aquí no siempre alcanza las expectativas. Ya lo decía Neil en la cita que fusilo al principio, aquí hay de todo, lo bueno y lo malo. Neil Young en estado puro, su etapa con The Squires, retazos de su paso por Crosby, Stills & Nash o Buffalo Springfield, el Young eléctrico y el acústico, sobre todo el acústico de voz dorada.
Con todo esto no puedo más que afirmar que la caja vale la pena y mucho. A pesar de los pesares, aquí hay muchas cosas que destacar y algunas de ellas te pueden dejar con la boca abierta. Tenemos ese documento impagable que es el directo del Fillmore con la formación original de Crazy Horse. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere acababa de salir y el grupo suena con la tensión primitiva de lo recién hecho. Ilusión a raudales la que transmiten esos seis temazos. Queman. También me parece espectacular el concierto acústico que llena el CD 7 en el que Neil aparece en estado de gracia con su voz en perfectas condiciones. Arte a raudales como el de esos temas poco o nada conocidos para mí como son “Journey Through the Past” o “On the Way Home”, gemas incontestables como esa versión de ensayo de “Words”. El tema de Harvest se alarga hasta los 15 minutos en una sesión de hipnosis memorable.
Podría haber sido más compacto y no repetir las canciones (aunque sea en tomas diferentes). Podría haber obviado los extractos de su discografía oficial. Ocho CDs puede ser demasiado para digerir en estos tiempos de prisa. Sí, si esto lo hubiera sacado otro artista. Neil Young nunca ha rendido cuentas a nadie y aquí se ha empeñado en aplicar la lupa a estos nueve años de su carrera, de los instantes más intensos de un periplo sin igual. Regalazo.
