The Best of 1980-1990 (U2, 1998) [RECOPILATORIO]

ROCK ÉPICO. Aquí están las canciones que cimentaron la carrera de U2. Mejores o peores, toda la gloria, mucha o poca, de la que se han hecho acreedores parte de aquí. Por eso, más allá del orden casi aleatorio de los temas y de cualquier queja estúpida, hay que quitarse el sombrero ante una colección que repasa la época más decisiva para el cuarteto de Dublín.

Es verdad que se me hace raro que empiecen con "Pride (In the Name of Love)", de 1984, y se guarden "I Will Follow", su primer pelotazo para la mitad del trayecto. Sin embargo, como digo arriba, eso acaba importando poco. Los lazos entre las canciones, sus temáticas, el sonido tan propio que siempre han tenido U2 hacen que todo acabe funcionando como la bola de demolición que tiene que ser un álbum que glose sus mayores éxitos en su vibrante y estratosférica primera década de existencia.

Una primera década de la que aquí han destacado sus momentos más épicos por encima del pinzamiento raquídeo de sus primeros momentos. Sí, ninguna canción de October (1981), salvo la pequeña pieza titular que regalan como pista oculta, y solo una de Boy (1980) para dejar espacio al endiosamiento posterior a War (1983), once de las catorce pistas.

Algo tan comprensible si hablamos de juntar sus mayores éxitos como injusto y desequilibrado si esperamos disfrutar del cuadro completo. Pero está claro cuál es la cara de los irlandeses que el gran público prefiere. Que parece ser la cara que ellos mismos defienden. Y eso, por muy inapelable que sea esta obra, ni lo entiendo ni lo puedo aceptar.
